A timezone is a region of the globe that observes a uniform standard time. There are currently 38 distinct offsets from UTC (Coordinated Universal Time), though most people deal with only the 24 "standard" hour offsets.
UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) and GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) are essentially the same for everyday use. The key difference is that UTC is based on atomic clocks and never changes, while GMT is an actual timezone and can observe daylight saving time (the UK observes BST in summer).
Most US and European timezones observe DST, shifting clocks forward 1 hour in spring and back in fall. This calculator automatically accounts for DST based on the selected date.
