What is the Pomodoro Technique?
The Pomodoro Technique is a time management method developed by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s. It uses a timer to break work into intervals, traditionally 25 minutes long, separated by short breaks. Each interval is known as a "pomodoro" (Italian for tomato), named after the tomato-shaped kitchen timer Cirillo used as a student.
Benefits of the Pomodoro Technique
- Reduces mental fatigue by building in regular breaks
- Improves focus by creating time constraints
- Helps estimate how long tasks take
- Reduces the impact of interruptions
- Makes large tasks feel more manageable
How to Use This Timer
- Choose a task to work on
- Start the timer (25 min default)
- Work on the task until the timer rings
- Take a short break (5 min)
- After 4 pomodoros, take a long break (15 min)
